The changes you need to make.

The changes you have to make.

Wanting to be the best and thinking about being the best is sometimes the easiest thing to do in sport.

What makes it hard to do is actually doing it.

I can remember when I first started I wanted to win and dreamt about winning, but my actions were nowhere near where my dreams were.

I did a track session one day and the coach stopped me to check if my pulse was even beating. Very embarrassing, but he was spot on, I wasn’t trying and my actions weren’t living up to my dreams.

So it was time to make changes, and changes that were going to help me be the best I could be. The first thing I did was look at the way I was living as a young teenager, what I was eating and what sort outlook I had on my training.

Winning is so hard to do, it looks easy but it is hard work and that is what I wanted to do – the hard work.

I made changes hard changes, I stopped going out with my friends to parties and stopped the late nights. I would eat at home as much as possible, nothing beats home cooking. I would rest and recover as much as possible, stay out of the sun and just think about paddling every minute of every day.

It is important to remember that my dreams had now turned to the Olympics. Your dreams maybe different to mine but you should always go to the necessary lengths to achieve them.

Winning is hard and it is important to do the little things right:

• Every session counts to be the best you can be
• Never be late
• Eat the right food
• Hydrate
Take Supplements
• Stretch
• Weights
Cross Training
• Mind on paddling 24/7
• Watch video and analysis of your paddling

Then after all that make sure you actually go to paddling.

The best way to come up with what is winning for you is write down your goals and then be true to yourself on achieving them.

Don’t write down the Olympics if you are going to paddle 2-3 times a week.
Be honest in your training and your goals.

Then make the changes that are need for you to achieve them.

Warm up
Warm down
Do drills before and after training
Cut back on the good life
Eat well
Structure your training program
Get video help

These changes look hard and daunting but they are just small changes.

Lot’s of people are training just like you, you just have to do what they are not doing. Often they are not doing the small things that we have just talked about.

Make the changes and see the difference.
